Early Career and Debut

Gursharan’s passion for cricket began at a young age. His initial exposure to the sports world was primarily local, where he participated in numerous school and college matches before eventually entering the professional realm.

He made his first-class debut for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy during the 1984-85 season. A naturally talented player with keen instincts and rigorous training, Singh quickly made his mark by scoring highly respectable runs consistently against reputed teams. A few years of vigorous domestic performance led him towards international recognition.

International Reputation

Singh took part in only one ODI (One Day International) match for which he was chosen as part of the Indian team that competed against Australia in Margao on October 22, 1991. However, it was in Test cricket that Singh left a more lasting impression.

  • In January of 1990, he made his test debut against New Zealand held at Christchurch where he scored a meagre 9 runs but leapt into fame through fielding at forward short leg position where many established players were hesitant about venturing due to its dangerous proximity from the batsman’s bat.
  • Singh also played two other Test matches – both against Sri Lanka –making a total of four innings with an average of 30.00 with his highest score being an unbeaten 61.

Life after Cricket

Gursharan Singh had always been passionate about improving cricket at all levels. Thus, post his retirement as an active Cricketer (2000), he ventured into cricket administration and coaching roles to help develop future aspects of the game in India.
Singh served as Assistant Manager for the Indian Cricket Team on more than one occasion – most notably during 2011 World Cup which was co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
