Rakesh Shukla: Cricket Legend

Rakesh Shukla is a former Indian first-class cricketer and notable all-rounder in the sport of cricket. He was born on May 4, 1948 in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. His cricketing career as an accomplished right-arm leg-spinner and lower-middle order batsman spanned from the late 1960s to early 1980s.

Rakesh pursued his higher education at Delhi University. Even in his formative years, he displayed prodigious talent for cricket. As a young boy growing up in North India, Rakesh’s passion for cricket was ignited during street games with friends and schoolmates. Right from childhood, it was clear that he possessed special abilities which earmarked him for great achievements in the cricket world.

Blossoming into a top-tier player due to his impressive record at university level, Rakesh progressed through numerous regional teams before being selected for Delhi’s prestigious First-Class team. Ranji Trophy, where he demonstrated himself not only as a skillful bowler but also as a dependable lower-order batsman.

• In total, he played 121 first-class matches and scored 3006 runs with an average score of 30.06.
• He has taken 295 wickets under his belt with bowling averages barely over thirty.
• The best innings count of him taking wickets counts ten while his best match figures show a brilliant display of fourteen wickets.

Following his consistent performances in domestic cricket, the seasoned leg-spinner was called up to the Indian national team for home Test series against England, 1981/82 season. Although he didn’t make a significant impact when given chances at this level, it didn’t diminish his already well-established reputation from a glittering domestic career.

Following his retirement from professional cricket, Shukla continued with his first love – the game of cricket – by maintaining an active involvement in Delhi’s cricket coaching circuit. His invaluable experience and insight have benefitted many young talents seeking to breakthrough in Indian cricket. He also spend after years as a member of Delhi’s senior selection committee.
In addition to this, Rakesh runs a successful air freight business which is one of North India’s leading companies in its field.
