Born into a family that loved sports, Kapil was introduced to cricket at a very young age by his elder brother Bhushan. His raw talent and flair for the game earned him a spot in the Haryana Cricket team when he was just 15 years old. He quickly rose through the ranks owing to his exceptional all-round performances, which eventually got him selected for the national side.

  • Dev’s debut test match took place against Pakistan in October 1978 where he grabbed attention for taking 5 wickets in the second innings.
  • He delivered one of his finest displays during the series against Australia held in Melbourne between November-December, 1980. He scored his maiden century (100 runs) and claimed twelve wickets making it an unforgettable performance.
  • Dev achieved fame worldwide after leading Indian cricket team to victory in the World Cup in 1983 defeating West Indies in final. It was under his captaincy that India won their first world cup title.
  • In February 1987, he became the greatest Test Wicket-taker surpassing Richard Hadlee’s record of 431 wickets.
  • With his exceptional skill as an all-rounder, he also became the second player to achieve both 4000 runs and 400 wickets in Test cricket.

Following his retirement from competitive sport in 1994, Dev has continued with a career in commentary and sports administration. He served as India’s national cricket coach between 1999 and 2000 during which he started developing junior talents. All these efforts culminated into him being named the Indian Cricketer of the Century by Wisden Cricket Almanacks in 2002.

  • Kapil Dev was honored by The Government of India with the Padma Shri award in 1982 and further recognized for his contributions to the games with the prestigious Padma Bhushan award in 1991.
  • In July 2008, Kapil Dev was introduced into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. This acknowledgment solidified his place among cricket’s greatest players.
